Paa Joe

Coffin artist and sculptor (*1947)

Paa Joe (* 1947) developed into the most famous coffin artist of Ghana in recent years. He learned his carpentry work from 1962 to 1974 in the workshop of Kane Kwei in Teshie. In 1976, he opened his own studio in Nungua, but moved his workshop in 2008 to Pobiman. Paa Joe is now retired and his son Jacob manages the workshop where he collaborates with several masters like Eric Kpakpo and Tawiah who were both trained by Paa Joe.

Since the 1990s, Paa Joe’s figurative coffins have been shown in numerous museum exhibitions around the world, including the Pompidou Center in Paris, in «Les Magiciens de la terre».
