Paa Joe & Ataa Oko in «Six Feet Under»

For the exhibition «Six Feet Under» Paa Joe and Ataa Oko created in collaboration with Regula Tschumi several figurative coffins. All of them were exhibited in 2006 in the Art Museum Berne. It was the first time that a figurative coffin and about 300 drawings of figurative coffins and palanquins of Ataa Oko were shown in an art museum.

Ataa Oko’s hen coffin was integrated into the collection of the Art Museum Berne, and some of Paa Joe’s work came in 2017 into the collection of the Museum of Cultures in Basle.

Coffin miniatures

Before Paa Joe moved in 2008 from Nungua to Pombiman, coffin miniatures were only made in his studio by his apprentices. They were allowed to sell their pieces to tourists so that they got some pocket money.

Well over 90 years old, Ataa Oko was still drawing almost every day, but the colouring was now left to his son Kofi.
