Coffin miniatures

Miniature coffins used to be made only by Paa Joe’s apprentices in those years when Paa Joe was still in Nungua. Today there are several workshops and artists who create such miniature coffins, they are no longer the work of Paa Joe’s apprentices. Masters like Ben Amartey, Eric Kpakpo or Kudjoe Affutu have become specialists in creating them. Miniatures are now sold to art galleries, but some artists like Kudjoe Affutu create them not only for collectors, but also to develop new coffin models or to test new materials. The miniatures shown here were made in the workshop of Kudjoe Affutu.

Regula Tschumi delivered coffin miniatures to several museum shops. Since 2005 she has collected for herself miniatures from the workshops of Paa Joe, Kudjoe Affutu and Eric Kpakpo. Most objects shown on this website belong now to her private collection and are available for museum exhibitions.
