Cape Coast had been one of the largest slave trading centres of West Africa. From 1664 to 1877 it was also the colonial capital of the British Gold Coast empire.
Today, Cape Coast and the neighbouring town of Elima fascinate their visitors with impressive and well preserved buildings and slave castles and with their colourful fishing ports.
